Product Review & Forever DNA Crystal Vault

    By M. Kotch

Memorial plaques are nothing new. Many of us have seen them on someone’s desk or on a friend’s wall; these plaques often include a religious reference or motif (such as a Star or figure of Jesus).

But what if you’re just spiritual, agnostic or not religious at all? What kind of memorial plaque would you consider? The makers of Forever DNA Crystal Vault offer an option for those seeking a memorial that’s not faith related. They offer a crystal plaque that’s imprinted with a person’s distinctive DNA markers. How’s that for unique?

Leaning on science instead of poetry, the plaque was created by the DNA:SI Labs, a privately-held forensic analysis company based in Burlington, NC. “We created the crystal vault in 2007,” says DNA Crystal Vault executive Randy Emerson. Who are some of their clients? “We noticed a lot of scientists and professors ordering our plaques—even purchasing them as presents for family members.”

Have questions about these non-religious memorial plaques? Here are a few answers.

What is a Forever DNA Crystal Vault?
It’s a standing crystal plaque that’s engraved with a loved one’s name, date of birth and death, along with a unique DNA “fingerprint”: a representation of an individual’s DNA double helix. It also includes a sample of a loved one’s DNA that’s pressure-sealed and attached to silica beads. An LCD crystal provides illumination for the beads within this tiny vault. The Forever DNA Crystal Vault remains on an illuminated, rotating stand and operates with batteries or electricity.

What kind of DNA sample does the company need?
The company needs hair, saliva or tissue samples to engrave the image and create the silica beads.

How long does the process take?
The whole process takes about four weeks. DNA samples need to be collected within a few days after a loved one’s passing and before cremation.

    How much does it cost?
Each Forever DNA Crystal Vault costs $695. DNA:SI Labs offers a discount on multiple orders (such as when ordering memorial plaques for a loved one’s children, for example).

Is the engraved image really a person’s unique DNA?
Yes. The company takes a snapshot of a person’s unique DNA. Just like an individual’s fingerprint, no two DNA samples perfectly match—unless they’re from identical twins.

Do I need to worry about the DNA sample being replicated or about any unauthorized testing/uses?
No. DNA:SI Labs do not recreate a persona’s entire DNA code, nor do they replicate, test samples, or submit samples for any experimentation. The engraved image captures the same markers used to identify missing persons—nothing more than a snapshot of a person’s entire genetic makeup.

Where can I purchase the Forever DNA Crystal Vault?
The memorial crystal plaque can be purchased through participating funeral homes, or directly through DNA:SI Labs.

Is the Forever DNA Crystal Vault only intended for those who have passed on?
No. The company can create a Forever DNA Crystal Vault without a date of birth and date of death engraving on the plaque.
