In today’s Washington Post is a story on the mishandling of bodies by funeral homes operated by Service Corporation International. What makes this equally appalling is the time it took for the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers to address the issue. Initial complaints were filed as early as Dec. 6, 2008. And, to state the obvious failings of SCI, the company bills itself as the single largest funeral service provider that celebrates “Life with Dedication, Excellence & Innovation”. Time to live up to the brand message fellas.
This is not the first time SCI has been in the news for egregious failures to handle the disposition of human remains in a dignified – or sanitary – manner. For a list of SCI funeral homes to avoid, go here.
