    Dreams

Twenty years ago, while I was living abroad, my uncle died in a car crash. While ten years apart in age, he and I were very close. His death affected me greatly.

Yet, because I was overseas at the time of his death, I was unable to attend the funeral. And over the span of several years I would dream that my uncle was still alive – vivid dreams – where I woke up believing that he was downstairs in the living room watching TV, only to realize moments later that indeed he was gone.

Slate.com published an article by Meghan O’Rourke yesterday looking at the role dreams have in helping people mourn the loss of a loved one. And it brought me back twenty years to when I started dreaming about my uncle.
