Unprepared to deal with aging Baby Boomers?

This article in the Star-Telegram highlights the lack of sufficient geriatricians in America. With the baby boom generation entering the AARP demographic, this should elicit some concern – if not for boomers themselves, then for their children and spouses.

It’s not entirely bleak, as technology will presumably help with efficiency in providing Healthcare. However, the sheer magnitude of the ratio – 1 geriatrician for every 5,000 patients older than 65 – gives reason for pause. Will the invisible hand of the market ensure there are sufficient resources available to the aged? Or will government need to respond (on top of bailing out the banks, automakers and a growing list of constituents)? We are living through interesting times.
