    Loss of a competitor?

Along with a recent announcement that a third of employees had been laid off from Eons.com, was news that the site would soon be without its obit section. This is unfortunate. I found the massive obituary listings to be without equal online.

And, in my view, Eons was never a competitor to Otrib. Jeff Taylor, Eons founder, had always made clear his site’s mission – to help people live their retirement years to the max. Whereas Otrib is about the three main stages of death – Pre-Need (planning), At-Need (notification) and Post-Need (honoring/grieving) – Eons was primarily dealing with death notifications.
So, if the report is accurate (I checked the site about an hour ago and the obit section was still there), Otrib wishes the folks at Eons, who were let go, a new job as soon as possible. And to the Eons users who were regulars of the obit section, please consider Otrib.com friendly territory where you can find obituary listings as well as our custom Otrib Tribute Pages, where you can honor a deceased loved one absolutely free.

Personal disclosure – I used to work for Jeff Taylor. I moved to Boston because of Jeff Taylor. (And yes, I think that had a lot to do with the Red Sox reversing the curse, but that’s a blog entry for another day. :) I am a huge fan of Jeff Taylor. I think he is a visionary and first-rate leader. He has been very good to me personally and to my family. I’m glad to see that Eons is going to continue on. I wish them a very successful future.
